 E-Stops: The Winch Stops Here!
Preventing Winch Entanglement Injuries with an Emergency Stop

The capstan winch is the most powerful thing on the deck of a seiner, and almost every year a fisherman gets injured or killed in a wrap-up. To prevent these types of injuries, NIOSH engineers worked with fishermen to develop an emergency stop device for winches. This session will discuss the development and commercialization of this technology.

The Search for the Perfect PFD: Preventing Fatalities from Falls Overboard

Falls overboard are the second leading cause of death among all commercial fishermen. An easy way to increase your chances of survival is to wear a personal flotation device while working on deck. Since 2008 NIOSH has surveyed 400 Alaska fishermen about their opinions and attitudes related to falling overboard and wearing PFDs, and 200 field tested six new PFD models for 30 days. This hands on presentation will summarize the results of this study and provide information about the types of PFDs their peers found acceptable in working conditions and give attendees a chance to see the PFDs for themselves.  SHOW UP - YOU COULD WIN A FREE PFD!
